Construction of Žalgiris Arena in Kaunas
Largest indoor arena in the Baltics
Core facts and numbers
Žalgiris Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena in the New Town of Kaunas, Lithuania. The arena is located on an island of the Nemunas River. It is the largest indoor arena in the Baltics, covering 39,684 m2 and arena's maximum possible seating capacity for basketball games is 15,415 and 20,000 spectators for concerts. The Žalgiris Arena replaced the Kaunas Sports Hall as a major venue in the city.
Within the framework of the project we were in charge of structural design of interfloor slabs and beams. The main challenge of this part was to design beams that would hold the spectator’s tribune. Therefore, engineers team decided in favor of single span beams that are holding tribune as a cantilever. Beam cross-section height on the tribune side reached 1,20 m. In case, post-tensioning wouldn’t have been applied, this number would be much bigger. Another hardship was due to the oval form of the slabs, as tendons are performing the best in circumstances of rectangular shape. In order to create an illusion of most beneficial form, slab was divided into 4 parts.
